The Sword Coast—

No new posts

The Sword Coast,

not to be confused with the Sword Coast North, stretches along the Sea of Swords from Waterdeep south to the river Chionthar at Baldur's Gate in the south. The Sword Coast gets its name from the white cliffs that rise up sharply for hundreds of miles of the coastline, from Baldur's Gate to the south and up to the River Dessarin in the north. Officially, the coast line north of Waterdeep up to Icewind Dale is not part of the Sword Coast, though most folk simply use the term Sword Coast for this otherwise unnamed stretch of coast line.

Waterdeep—

Waterdeep,

also known as the City of Splendors or the Crown of the North,[2] is the most important and influential city in the North and perhaps in all Faerûn.[3] For this reason it is considered part of the Western Heartlands of the Realms, even though it lies 150 miles north of Daggerford on the shores of the Sword Coast. The city sits "slightly above the 45 degree north latitude line on Toril."[4] The road to Waterdeep is well paved and well patrolled. The city is the hub of trading from the mineral-rich lands to the north, the merchant kingdoms of Amn and Calimshan to the south, the kingdoms of the Inner Sea to the east, and the sea kingdoms and traders to the west. Waterdeep authority extends between thirty to forty miles from its walls[5] where over a million people make their home

The High Forest—

The High Forest

a remnant of the days of old, when all of Faerûn was covered in green and elves, giants and dragons ruled the world. The forest is a vast region of old forest growth bounded by the Nether Mountains in the north and the High Moor to the south. To the west is found the Evermoors and to the east the vast desert of Anauroch. The eastern border of the High Forest butts up against Delimbiyr Vale[1] through which flows the Delimbiyr River.

Icewind Dale—

Icewind Dale

is a arctic region, along the northernmost part of the Sword Coast. It is famous because many events involving the drow renegade, Drizzt Do'Urden, occurred here. The region was first populated when Northlander longships reached the region during the last centuries of the Illefarn empire. Initially settling on the islands, the northlanders eventually would found Icewind Dale. Icewind Dale is an icy tundra and the northernmost explored area of Faerûn. Its only permanent settlements are known as the Ten Towns, a confederation of a number of minor settlements cooperating with each other. The region is mainly populated by fishermen, craftsmen, rangers, dwarves mining the deeps for minerals and precious stones, barbarians, and merchants who tolerate the hostile climate in the hope of trading in ivory and gems. The "capital" of the region is the town of Bryn Shander.

Mithral Hall

the fabled ancestral home of Bruenor Battlehammer, along with Clan Battlehammer.[1] The prosperous dwarven mine has tunnels that are often lined with natural veins of mithral as thick as an arm. The hall has an eastern gate of iron[3] which opens out onto the River Surbrin.

Neverwinter—

Neverwinter

Neverwinter, also known as the City of Skilled Hands or the Jewel of the North, is a metropolis sitting on the northwestern Sword Coast of Faerûn. The video games Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 take their name from the city. Neverwinter is regarded by many, including the erudite travel writer Volo, as the most cosmopolitan and the most civilized city in all of Faerûn, quite a reputation, considering the breadth and variety of the continent. The city is a member in good standing of the Lords' Alliance and Lord Nasher has ensured that the city is well defended, both physically and magically, against attacks or infiltration from Luskan, Neverwinter's warlike rival. Maps of the city, which has a maze of meandering streets, are not distributed, as part of an effort to thwart Luskan spies. The city of Neverwinter is so named because, even though the town is situated in the cold north of Faerûn, the Neverwinter River that flows through it is heated by fire elementals living under the nearby Mount Hotenow in the Neverwinter Wood. The heat given off from the river creates a permanent warm climate in the immediate area; without the elementals, the river, and subsequently the city's water supply, would freeze over.

Luruar

commonly known as the Silver Marches, is a confederation of cities in the north of Faerûn, under the leadership of Alustriel Silverhand, former ruler of Silverymoon. It consists of Silverymoon, Citadel Adbar, Deadsnows, Jalanthar, Quaervarr, Citadel Felbarr, Everlund, Mithral Hall, and Sundabar, and its goal is to protect the North against the growing horde of orcs in the mountains.[1] The nation is also a member of the Lords' Alliance.[2] It is bordered by the Anauroch desert to the east, the High Forest to the south, the Savage Frontier to the west and the Spine of the World mountain range to the north.
